Oh, so now there is no election. Somehow, for some reasons, all the candidates are disqualified and the reigning one returns unopposed (with a clean slate as usual). I can understand the rationale (read below for more information) but somehow, we cannot stop conspiracy theories from generating. Oh well, that is life I supposed.
Let us begin with the Presidential Elections Committee (PEC) decision on the 4 candidates. Firstly, there is the present President. In the statement by PEC, it said and I specifically quote;
XXX has all the credentials for the office. Not only is he well regarded and respected for his public service, he is also a man of integrity, good character and reputation.
Of course lah, if he is not of that fore-mentioned calibre, then why on earth is he the president for 6 fricking years? Bureaucratic admin cock up?
Next we shall look at the rest of the candidates performance in the scorecard.
First, we have Mr OBE who claimed to be the sole proprietor of a realty business. Now we all know he is lying through his teeth when it was discovered (by sheer will perhaps or more probably by the nice agents of the government) that his business licence had expired when he applied for the certificate. But then, someone like him (to some extent) having some skeleton in his closet can be mould into prim and proper behaviour by our nice agents and beside, in the event of disclosure, he can always acknowledge it as an honest mistake? Right…
But the more pressing question is how can you expect someone who lied about his business status (even if it was expired recently) and NOT even vaguely aware of this expiration (absentmindedness or something more sinister) ever becoming an honest president? Part of the job requirement is keeping tab on our reserves, which according to The Economist’s forecast, stood at US$115 billion dollars. He could have renewed his license before opening his mouth, and we are talking about 115 billion dollars here.
Next in line, we have Mr RGN, who had retired from the Commonwealth Forces as a senior storekeeper in 1987. A storekeeper? Oops, I mean Senior Storekeeper… My bad… my bad…remember okie, its Senior Storekeeper.
There is a reason why the constitution specifically states that candidates' career histories should have similar or comparable position of seniority and responsibility in any organisation of equivalent size or complexity (that is paid up capital of 100 millions). How can we let any Tom, Dick & Harry to get into the systems and mess it up? Beside the reserves, a president is a figure head which encompass meeting the public, foreign dignitaries and hosting official events. Can such Tom, Dick and Harry be up to it? Well, you can argued that these etiquette an be learned but you cannot changed a man of any calibre to fit into a top post in a matter of days. Beside, not every TOM’s DICK is HARRY (Hairy)… haha
The third applicant, Mr Andrew Kuan looks hopeful at least in his early statement. As a CFO of JTC and other equivalent posts, he looks set to pass the requirement. Alas, it was rejected. I can accept the other 2 wannabes’ disqualification which seems reasonable, but this I found it hard to stomach. Why is he not qualified? Sure CFO, CIO, COO, CEO, or any COC(k) in a government-linked company can make this mark right? Don’t tell me these organs do not have at least 100 million worth of paid up capital? To brush him aside for lack of equivalent status compared to blah blah blah looks more like a haphazard piece of rushed work than intense research and reasoning. Instead, they should work on his closet… see got any skeleton or not :P
Though I am a bit disappointed that the reasoning are not up to my standard and to the scrutiny of the world. Like it or not, we are all interconnected to the rest of mankind, whatever happened in one country will be known to the rest of the world, however insignificant it may be. Then again, there is thousand and one way to skin a cat (in Uncle M’s words). Watch this space.
